Periodically we'll do a "roll call" to find out a little more about the EFRT members and to see the diversity in approaches to topics related to training and racing. Leave us a comment and tell us what YOU eat for breakfast!!

I usually have a swig of OJ and half a banana. If I’m going to do something a little more intense I might eat 2-3 GU Chomps (with caffeine). Then after the session is over its time to feast! Cereal, Coffee, English muffin with peanut butter. I love breakfast! [Liz Baugher, 23] I used to eat plain greek yogurt and blueberries or oatmeal and trail mix. However, I have now started to follow the Paleo Diet for Athletes so now it is watermelon, cantoloupe and honeydew and pineapple. [Siphiwe Baleka, 40] My usual meal before bigger workouts and all races is steel-cut oats, almond butter, and banana (all cooked together) plus coffee and some water with BCAAs (I use Scivation Xtend). For shorter workouts, I’ll opt for a piece of Ezekiel bread topped with two eggs and spinach. I’ve figured out how to cook both of these quickly with just the microwave and a toaster for the bread! [Cortney Martin, 44] My training starts at 5 am most days so in order to not have to wake up early than 4 am (I work until 8 pm), I have a liquid breakfast so it will digest faster. I drink an Ensure because it has the right blend of nutrients and travels well. In a race, if I have more than 3 hours until my wave start I may have 2. That way I can have my ‘practiced’ breakfast wherever I am even if I am without a refrigerator or microwave. I follow that with a small shot of coffee or Warrior Tea. [Laura Bergmann, 29] I have a personalized homemade cereal based upon a 2000 year old Roman Legion recipe that I schmoozed out of a wrinkly, little 80 year old Swiss miss while on one of my wild, youthful, worldly ski adventures in St. Moritz in the 1970's. Have been fixin' and mixin' ever since. It has more than ten dried fruits, and more than 10 organic grains, each supplying a different nutritional basis for its consumption. Its the most nutritious, high energy, long-lasting meal I have ever come across in my well-heeled 57 years. [Scott Endsley, 57] [caption id="attachment_1011" align="alignright" width="150" caption="Bill Vann"][/caption] Something I eat before every workout is a banana and usually a Gatorade prime 01 and 16-20oz of water. I have a hard time training with a lot of food in my stomach and try to keep digestion to a minimum so the blood can go to my extremities rather than my stomach during the workout. If the workout is over75min I will usually bring some kind of gel or snack in case I feel like I need it. [Bill Vann, 22] It depends on the morning. I'm usually either teaching a spin class or swimming in the early morning (5am) so I will just have a Cliff Bar before my session to fuel. During the longer training weekends I will usually have a bowl of oatmeal with organic milk and one packet of Generation UCAN with protein before I head out the door. [Nick Logan, 30]
