The season is about to begin. I am at a tough stage in life with time management skills being pushed to the limit. Balancing making a living in this economy, children at home that are at the age to start sports, needing to be a good husband, but also wanting to stay fit for triathlon and compete at a high level. There are many workouts at odd times of the morning, day, night, and sometimes with life, not at all. Each year I say this is my last year to compete at Triathlon Worlds. It tough to give up and yes, I will admit, I am an addict, to triathlon that is. Things are changing in life and priorities are also. My number one priority is raising my children that God gave me. They are at a stage that they need me more and more in their little lives. When I come home and they run to me and grab around my legs and give a bear hug, because they are glad to see me. It tough to say "see you later I've got to work out!" I have chosen workout times around their lives. Early when they are not awake or when they are at school. I also this year decided to do most of my cycling training on a trainer to maximize time. BTW Endurance Films Training Videos are great for trainer time. You get the feel of outdoors when you are indoors on a trainer. I have resigned myself that I may not be at my top form like a few years ago, but what I get in return is experiences building into the lives of my children that will be far longer lasting than if I placed 10 spots higher in a local triathlon. My goal this year is to go out on a high note at Worlds in Auckland in October. I am in what is called Maintenance Training. I will begin Base training the first week in May to peak in October. Here in Texas we have the luxury of training outside almost year round. So this winter has not been too bad. I feel my fitness is pretty good if not better than last year at this time. I have heard and read articles about maintenance training. So I live by those rules: Maintain fitness with 2-3 workouts a week of each sport discipline. Swimming I don't loose fitness as fast, but Cycling and running can be lost quickly. Since November, I am running 3 times a week, Cycling 3 times a week, and swimming once, with strength training once a week. I feel really good right now and feel my base fitness is where it needs to be. Will keep updating as the season progresses. I am an optimist and I focus on the high notes. I want to experience it with both Triathlon and my family. I realize for me one is changing with Triathlon and one is beginning, raising the children.
