Throughout the early portion of the training season and my earlier races I noticed the forearm pads on my aerobars wearing down quicker than usual. Typically I replace them every year, but so far this year I had to replace them twice. I decided to schedule a fitting at my local bike shop (this was fitting number 4 on this bike...1. initial fitting 2. new saddle 3. new aerobars). After an initial assessment it was determined that my elbows vice my forearms were resting on the arm pads thus causing them to wear down quicker than they should. On a side note, the fitter (a Specialized BG Master Fitter) gave me a couple quick tips to boost up the pads. The brand of pads have a recessed portion around the screws. He said to put some double-sided tape within this recessed portion to help even it out. So if anyone reading this is having the same problem there is your quick fix. After adjusting the placement of my forearms, the fitter suggested adjusting my position to reduce the amount of chest exposure and gain a more aggressive position. To do this he suggested replacing my 175mm crank with a 170mm crank. From here he brought my saddle forward and raised the overall seat height. This allowed for the more aggressive position while keeping the same hip angle. Overall thoughts. The new position definitely has a different feel and certainly my neck will take awhile to adjust as my head was lowered by roughly an inch. I've been on the bike twice now and it feels great. I'll be racing this weekend at Ft. Ritchie Triathlon in Cascade, MD to test it out and use it as another prep for Burlington.
