Finding a Reason2Race(R)

Many of us take part in triathlon for a certain reason.... To reach a goal, to inspire a family member, to challenge ourselves both physically and mentally. As a Female Pro Triathlete, I not only hope to inspire, but also share with you my reasons for racing. Triathlon has become a huge part of my life and during my early years of triathlon my Dad passed away. I used racing to find inner strength ... Read More

Just like Woodstock, give or take a million dollars' worth of bikes

It's known as the "Woodstock of triathlon." I would wager that participants in the original Woodstock were less concerned with compression wear and electrolyte balance. But with thousands of people flocking to one campground for a weekend full of racing, Wildflower triathlon definitely has its own unique vibe, and that's why I find myself returning there year after year. You can test yourself wit... Read More

5 ways to become a faster swimmer

The swim is frequently the most daunting part of a triathlon for new and seasoned racers alike. Aside from practice, practice, practice here are my recommendations on how to get the most benefit out of your time in the pool: 1. Flip turns. Many triathletes don't bother with flip turns because, after all, there are no walls in open water. But aside from making you faster in the pool, being able ... Read More

Get ready to RACE!! 10 days out...

(Photo shows the Smith Mountain Lake race venue last year from my kayak trip the following day!) First race is in 10 days - a fairly local sprint tri. I've been working to transition from post-marathon to tri-mode but I admit this one's been a toughie. The only other marathons I've run have been in the fall, after tri season wrapped. It's hard to be patient with myself, but I'm going to just foc... Read More

Boston Marathon

“Did you know you qualified for Boston?” The phrase that started it all. “I did?” was my reply. I never even thought to try or dared to hope….after all, I’m not a runner. So I thought. Once I realized how difficult it was to get into ‘Boston’ ( funny how it’s called that…no one says ‘Boston Marathon”…just ‘Boston’) I was dumbfounded, 3:33 is a good time? I hadn’t planned on running another... Read More

Nor'easter reverse sprint tri report

On Sunday the 14th I raced the Nor'easter reverse sprint tri up here in Maine. It takes place at the University of New England and the name for the sports teams is the Nor'easters. This is the first multisport race that I have done twice, so it was a good test to see if/how much I have improved on an exact repeat course. Last year on race day it was in the mid 60s, this year it was in the mid 4... Read More

Boston Marathon Race Report

Where shall I begin? I am heartbroken for the lives lost and forever shattered by the bombings on April 15, 2013 at the 117th running of the Boston Marathon. I was several blocks away in the post-finish line area when I heard what sounded like cannon fire, followed by emergency vehicles speeding toward the finish. Information began flowing by word of mouth that there were explosions, but there wer... Read More

Nautica SoBe Triathlon

I finally made it home, did laundry, got groceries, and put the bike back together. Therefore its time for my post-race write up! Ready or not here we go... The race was going to take place sunday morning, so we flew out to Miami on friday. Friday morning was off to a rough start as I randomly threw up on the pool deck before boarding the plan. Thats not my normal pre-race routine. I d... Read More

Greenwich Half Marathon Race Report- Fighting to live another day

Initially going into this race I wasn't really sure how I was going to run it. I accomplished my goal of breaking 1:20 at two weeks ago and I've been putting in some quality training time without much recovery since then. I knew I had not gained enough fitness to make a sizable difference time wise so I just wasn't sure how much I was going to be willing to give when it all came down to it unless... Read More

My Road to London April Update

There is about 4 1/2 weeks until my first race of the season and my training is coming along great. I had a breakthrough 1/2 marathon 2 weeks ago in a surprise performance that really snuck up on me. I did not taper and in fact had some pretty hard workouts in the days leading up to the race, leading me to believe I would have had another minute or two in me if I was fully rested and tapered. I... Read More
